It's that time of year again. </div>
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.vtablog.org/2011/05/137th-kentucky-derby.html" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="http://i1149.photobucket.com/albums/o591/honeybearrr/Derby.jpg" width="406" /></a></center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You guys, I am <b>SO</b> excited.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As you may or may not know, I am a huge Thoroughbred racing fan. I've followed the sport for over 12 years and worked at a racetrack both in the marketing department on the frontside and as a groom/hotwalker on the backside. I've been to countless tracks and several big events, including the Breeders' Cup. Needless to say, I know my way around the Form, the track and the horses.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But with all this, I still haven't made it to the Kentucky Derby yet. This is pretty sad, but I at least tried to make up for it at least year's Preakness. </div>
<br />
<center><a href="http://s1149.photobucket.com/albums/o591/honeybearrr/?action=view&current=AboutMe2.jpg" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="http://i1149.photobucket.com/albums/o591/honeybearrr/AboutMe2.jpg" width="203" /></a></center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Still, I would love to get to the Derby. I say that mostly because of the horses, but there's also that bit of me that would be excited to rock a Derby hat. I'm a fan of the simple and elegant hats: a pretty accent on top and a swoop over the lady's eye. Here are some of my favorites that I found in between studying pedigrees, workouts and past performances:</div>

<b>Here I Love You, by Pablo Neruda</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here I love you. <br />
In the dark pines the wind disentangles itself.<br />
The moon glows like phosphorous on the vagrant waters.<br />
Days, all one kind, go chasing each other.<br />
<br />
The snow unfurls in dancing figures.<br />
A silver gull slips down from the west.<br />
Sometimes a sail. High, high stars. <br />
Oh the black cross of a ship.<br />
Alone.<br />
<br />
Sometimes I get up early and even my soul is wet.<br />
Far away the sea sounds and resounds.<br />
This is a port.<br />
<br />
Here I love you.<br />
Here I love you and the horizon hides you in vain.<br />
I love you still among these cold things.<br />
Sometimes my kisses go on those heavy vessels<br />
that cross the sea towards no arrival.<br />
I see myself forgotten like those old anchors.<br />
<br />
The piers sadden when the afternoon moors there.<br />
My life grows tired, hungry to no purpose.<br />
I love what I do not have. You are so far.<br />
My loathing wrestles with the slow twilights.<br />
But night comes and starts to sing to me.<br />
<br />
The moon turns its clockwork dream.<br />
The biggest stars look at me with your eyes.<br />
And as I love you, the pines in the wind<br />
want to sing your name with their leaves of wire.

<span style="font-size: small;">I hope you all had as wonderful of a weekend as I did.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">After a 10.5 hour day at the office, I skipped happy hour to run home, throw on my pajamas, put on <i>The Descendents</i> and pig out on pizza with the family. <i>So. worth. it.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">(That Descendents movie is weird, right?)</span><br />
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I baked adorable cookies with my mother for a bake sale. I grew up making these little pieces of joy for nearly every holiday -- they taste like home.</div>
<br />
<center><img height="320" src="http://distilleryimage7.instagram.com/3a3d1fe48ca611e1abb01231381b65e3_7.jpg" width="320" /></center>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I spent plenty of time in my favorite little nook...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<center><img height="320" src="http://distilleryimage6.instagram.com/855e91c28c8a11e1989612313815112c_7.jpg" width="320" /></center>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...snuggled with my oh-so-handsome cat all weekend...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<center><img height="320" src="http://distilleryimage4.instagram.com/6affa13c8c8e11e19dc71231380fe523_7.jpg" width="320" /></center>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...enjoyed some tea (in a mug labeled for coffee), donuts and s'mores...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>(I worked out, so I deserved it...right?</i>)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<center><img height="320" src="http://distilleryimage10.instagram.com/eb7038d08c8a11e181bd12313817987b_7.jpg" width="320" /></center>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...and spent a lovely early and rainy Sunday morning reading Jane Maas' <i>Mad Women</i> (more to come on that).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
I'm hoping all of this sets me up for an energized, worry-free Monday. <i>How was your weekend?</i></div>honeybearhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07068102929693591898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2947814126590302753.post-41372090166292483172012-04-22T12:14:00.004-04:002012-04-29T12:21:05.002-04:00Effortless style<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been holding myself back from purchasing too many clothing items lately. Because, let's be honest, both my drawers AND my closet are overflowing with perfectly acceptable -- even<i> fabulous</i> -- items. But that doesn't keep me from spending my free time on some of my favorite retail sites.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These are some wonderful dresses I've found while scouring the internet. What makes them so wonderful is that they are eff-ort-less. I mean, what woman <i>doesn't</i> want to throw on a cute dress, some ravishing accessories and nothing else!
</div>
<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.vincecamuto.com/Clothing/DRESSES--SKIRTS/ABSTRACT-FLUTTER-SLEEVE.html" target="_blank"><img alt="Vince Camuto Abstract Flutter Sleeve" height="400" src="http://www.vincecamuto.com/live/products/large/U1019P1500.jpg" width="322" /></a></center>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Vince Camuto has long been one of my favorite shoe designers and I'm quickly racking up a collection. But he also recently debuted a clothing line and oh my goodness, it's good. The prints and outlines are to die for. Along with this one, I'm lusting after the Little White Dress and Safari Tribal Peasant Dress.
</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Old Navy's Belted Tie-Sleeve Crepe dress. I know first-hand that Old Navy knows how to do a wrap dress...and what a fun print!

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This dress is on the pricier side, but I'm in love. I have yet to see one like this this season, and you can easily make it sophisticated and classy or playful and girly.
</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=49426&vid=1&pid=118094&scid=118094002" target="_blank">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Old Navy's Jersey Mexicali dress. So simple - <b>so</b> much potential. And twenty bucks, people. <i>TWENTY.</i></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.hm.com/us/product/00138?article=00138-B#article=00138-B" target="_blank"><img alt="H&M Turquoise Patterned Dress" height="400" src="http://lp.hm.com/hmprod?set=key[source],value[/model/2012/G46%2000138%2088002%2067%200200%200.jpg]&set=key[rotate],value[]&set=key[width],value[]&set=key[height],value[]&set=key[x],value[]&set=key[y],value[]&set=key[type],value[STILL_LIFE_FRONT]&call=url[file:/product/large]" width="342" /></a></center>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've never been a fan of H&M solely because I can't buy their best clothing. The stores here are pretty crappy and only carry the scraps. I hear story after story of how great they are and see beautiful clothing from them, but I can never find it. I've perused their website and found drool-worthy items, but they don't let you (or me, at least) shop online. So here's hoping you can find this beautiful, perfect-for-the-beach dress at a store near you.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br/>
<i>What are your favorite stores for spring and summer dresses?</i></div>honeybearhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07068102929693591898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2947814126590302753.post-84149314743304825612012-04-21T15:05:00.001-04:002012-04-29T12:20:55.369-04:00Sunny day music<div style="text-align: justify;">
We're barely into spring and the weather is acting like it's summer. </div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aside from the scary ideas of apocalypses that run through my mind because of this, it's not a pretty bad gig. Spirits are lifted, the sandals are brought out and we get to open the windows and let the breeze in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are some songs you may want to play (loudly) while cooking or driving to your weekend destinations. These are pretty popular and old songs -- but who cares? When you hear a good song, you just gotta put it on repeat.</div>
<br />

<i>What music do you like to play on a sunny day?</i>honeybearhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07068102929693591898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2947814126590302753.post-71811261942328000592012-04-21T11:32:00.001-04:002012-04-29T12:20:43.720-04:00Brighten your workspace<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're anything like me, the workspace you were given by your lovely 9-5 corporation is less than inspiring. Grey cubicle walls, an off-white desk and a clunky, black computer aren't exactly the most beautiful things with which to spend your days. Within a week, I was ready to run out of my office and escape the dreary life inside.
</div>
<br/>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I spent my first two weekends discovering ways to brighten my own little piece of 9-5 drudgery. Are you ready to see how I did it (and received 'oohs' and 'ahhhs' from everyone around)?
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br/>
<b>1. Add color</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don't get me wrong -- I love neutrals and one of my favorite colors is grey. But when I'm stuck in a building for about 10 hours a day, I need some color (especially when spring comes around!).
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If it's possible to get your office supplies in brighter, matching colors, do it! Pops of color can really transform an area. Bringing in a bright lamp, pillow or cubicle wallpaper will instantly lift your mood.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<center><a href="http://www.number-nineteen.blogspot.com/"><img alt="Pops of color" height="320" src="http://i1149.photobucket.com/albums/o591/honeybearrr/ColorOffice.jpg" width="310" /></a></center>
If you have a home office, the possibilities for color are endless. Paint your walls an uplifting color, bring in a chair with bright pillows or paint your desk a new shade.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<center><a href="http://www.traditionalhome.com/design_decorating/showhouses/traditional-decorating-sunny-yellow_ss9.html" target="_blank"><img alt="Yellow home office" border="0" height="224" src="http://i1149.photobucket.com/albums/o591/honeybearrr/YellowHomeOffice.jpg" width="320" /></a></center>
<b>2. Collect trinkets</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have a little white bird on my desk at home and I practically die of gorgeousness every time I look at him. He serves no real purpose and cost me about $5.00 at Michaels.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Decor doesn't have to be expensive. Random, scattered pieces from all over your life (such as <a href="http://www.potterybarn.com/products/galvanized-metal-pail/?pkey=chome-office-accessories" target="_blank">this</a>, <a href="http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1860660&categoryId=cat1580096" target="_blank">this</a> and <a href="http://www.potterybarn.com/products/galvanized-metal-pail/?pkey=chome-office-accessories" target="_blank">this</a>) bring instant character to a space. And don't forget the <a href="http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/home-office/20657508.jsp" target="_blank">cute push pins</a> and framed pictures of your pooch!

<b>3. Bring the outside in</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And grow something! Freshly cut flowers always get my spirits up, and other plants, such as bonsai trees, offer you room for creativity through the pots they're planted in and the arrangement.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

If you work in a low-light area or just can't seem to keep anything alive (hey neighbor, I really DID water your plants while you were gone like you asked!), invest in some fake flowers or a hard-knocking fern. Those who are simply passing by won't be able to tell the difference -- just be sure to add lots of greenery!

<b>4. Inspire yourself</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I adore walls covered in inspiring photographs and prints. Images that inspire your work and encourage you to think outside the box are always helpful when you're stuck on a project or wondering if you'll ever change the world like you had planned.

<b>5. You</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
YOU are the most important element of any office. The curators of courage and <a href="http://unicornsforsocialism.com/2012/03/09/youre-not-a-coach-youre-a-life-purpose-provocateur-33-more-ooh-la-la-job-titles/" target="_blank">strategic stenographers</a> in you are the reason for an office in the first place. Remaining happy, hopeful and lighthearted will leave your clients feeling less stressed than when they walked through the door and said hello.
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And lets not forget the importance of having your shit together style-wise. Would you trust a stylist who can't even dress herself? Or an advertising executive who doesn't know the importance of branding himself? Okay, so maybe you would. But I feel MUCH more comfortable and at ease doing work with those who CAN tackle all their daily tasks -- including getting out of their pajamas in the morning. Show pride in yourself and the brilliant work will follow.

<span style="font-size: small;">Hello! I'm Lauren, a twenty-something girl with a passion for all things beautiful.</span>

adventures, riding hunter/jumpers and passionately following
Thoroughbred racing.</span></div>
